POST-SECONDARY SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION
E ‘ōpū ali‘i

Have the kindness, generosity, and even temper of a chief
OVERVIEW
Although a college education is by no means the single key to the enlightened Aloha ‘Āina leadership of our community, we recognize the value that such an education can provide in this wā huliau. As a consequence, the Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club has offered, since its earliest days, a post-secondary scholarship program for its members, families, and community at large. These are need-based scholarships given to students who show promise of acquiring, whatever their field of study, the kulana ‘ōpū aliʻi, the leader-servant mindset, that is so necessary to our lāhui’s well-being.
THREE SCHOLARSHIPS
We do our best to offer three scholarships a year of $1000 each, the actual amounts depend on member donations and the success of our annual Poi & Pāpale Scholarship Fundraiser. These scholarships are named in honor of club members who have been instrumental in establishing, rebuilding, and motivating the Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club in its 65 years of existence. The Māhoe-Trask Scholarship i mea e ho‘ohano ai i nā inoa ‘o Solomon Māhoe lāua ‘o James Trask, the founder and first president of KHCC. The Charlie Rose Scholarship i mea e ho‘ohano ai i ka inoa ‘o Charles Rose, the president instrumental in establishing the club’s curatorship of Ulupō Heiau. The Clara and Doc Burrows Scholarship, i mea e ho‘ohano ai i nā inoa ‘o Clara lāua ‘o Charles Borrows, the recently named hulu kūpuna of our club whose years of dedication to Kawainui inspire us to press on with equal, fearless determination.

YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION
Based on the availability of scholarship funds, the club president can – upon recommendation of the scholarship committee chair and approval by majority vote of the BOD – award need-based scholarships to youth members in good standing of the KHCC.
Youth scholarship applications should be addressed to the scholarship chair and consist of a letter of explanation — what the request is for and why it is important to the applicant – and supporting documentation to verify participation in the program/classes/activity for which aid is being requested. This letter should be written by a parent or guardian of the applicant, but the applicant is encouraged to write, to the best of his or her ability, a supplemental letter of explanation.
Preference will be given to requests for culture-based activities, for example: tuition assistance for a Pūnana Leo school year, a Ka Pahuhopu ʻo Kawainui intersession, a study-tour in Aotearoa, or a Kamehameha Schools summer explorations program.
Parents and guardians of potential scholars are asked to contact the scholarship chair before submitting a formal application in order to verify the availability of funding for their requests. Youth scholarship funding is contingent on money raised at our yearly Poi & Pāpale event, the first $3000 of which is dedicated to the three post-secondary school scholar awards that comprise the primary focus of our club’s scholarship program.
