Big mahalo to Kumu Lilinoe Sterling and Poʻo Kumu Keoki Fraser who (unlike the Lanikai Community Association that would have levied an exorbitant fee for our use of its park pavilion), allowed us to meet without charge at their Kaʻōhao School facility. It provided a perfect setting for our year-end get together and a flood of memories for the two Kaʻōhao alumni of the then Lanikai Elementary who are currently our club's president (Kapalai de Silva) and VP (Kalani Kaʻanāʻanā). The newly elected/re-elected members of our board: 2nd VP Kīhei de Silva, Treasurer ʻIlima Kaʻanehe, and Directors Nola Faria, Kaʻolu Luning, and Kū'ehu Seto-Myers. Huge-kine hugs, as well, to "termed-out" director Pualani Steele who will continue as our fundraising chairperson.
The KHCC delegation, seven strong, is in the third and final day of committee break-outs and plenary voting at the 65th convention of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Club. We'll meet with our general membership tomorrow (Sunday, 11-17) on zoom to report on the work of the convention and approve our own slate of BOD nominees for next month's election. Check your mailchimp notifications for time and link.
Our 2004-5 KHCC Scholarship awardees at our August fundraiser, E Hoʻolauna Pu Kakou. Kuʻupua Chang, a Marine Biology major (ʻOlelo Hawaiʻi minor) in her last year at UH Manoa, Kaha Barbieto a Hawaiian Studies major in his last semester at UH Manoa (and already in pilot school). And Makoa Salangdron, an Engineering major in his third year at UH Manoa. All are club members and long-time dancers at HMI.
Mahulua (perhaps Māhulua – two mists/vapors; Kualiʻiʻs mother) is the name of the ʻiliʻāina on which the Kailua Target now sits. The three burial preserves located there are named Mahulua ʻEkahi, ʻElua, and ʻEkolu in an effort to keep that older, almost forgetten name still in our mouths. Clean-up at the three preserves on Sunday went amazingly well thanks to the support of new KHCC member Josiah Akau, his family, and haumāna from his non-profit Kinai ʻEha. Other lima hana included Judy, Katey and Jillian, Anita, Ashley, and ʻEkolu. Also to be thanked: Lani for putting us in contact with Kalei at Target who provided us with water, snacks, trash bags, and a coned-off section of the parking lot.
Mahalo nui to the mob who showed up on Sunday 8-18 to mālama our iwi kupuna at Moanihi, Waiʻauia. Moanihi is the name of famed and beloved fresh water pool that was once located at Waiʻauia near the mākāhā of Lapaokanaka. Weʻve given that old name to the new burial preserve built in approximately the same area. Thus does the inoa live again with new layer of significance. Wahi a ke mele:
Upu aʻe ke aloha no Moanihi / No ka wai luʻu poʻo o ka makamaka Loves wells up for Moanihi / For the dived-in water of the loved ones. Preliminary figures indicate that KHCC raised almost $4000 in silent auction bidding at HMI's Hoʻolauna Pū Kākou last Sunday. Thanks nui to all of our contributors and workers under the leadership of our alakaʻi and fundraising chair Pualani Steele. This secures the club's scholarship money for the ʻ24-ʻ25 school year and will help a bit with defraying delegate expenses at the Association's convention in November. Hūlō, hūlō!
"Your fundraisng event on July 28 was the 91st year of Chuck's Hauʻoli Lā Hānau. I'm so happy to hear everything went well...Enjoy photo by Randall Akee, KS student, on a field trip to Na Pohaku. He thoughtfully sent me several upon learning of Chuck's passing. Blessings of wellness, peace and joy to all. Me ka haʻahaʻa -- Clara Kalaʻi Burrows."
HAPPENING SUNDAY: E HOʻOLAUNA PŪ KĀKOU
3 to 6 pm at Ke Kahua o Maliʻo, the King Intermediate School's hula mound and lawn. Tickets $10 at the gate (keiki 12 & under free). Music by Chad Takatsugi, Hōkū Zuttermeister, and Poʻokela Wood. Hula by the usual suspects. Silent Auction by KHCC to benefit the club's scholarship fund. Choke more stuff: Tammy, Danny, Kūlua, Nalo Snow . . . details below. HMI is happily home from Hilo after another great Merrie Monarch. Although we didnʻt do hula for Kailua this year, we certainly represented Kailua and KHCC quite well. Every last person in the photo above (taken by the awesome Nicholas Tomasello) is closely affiliated with our club, either as an officer, member, scholarship recipient, ally, or combination thereof. Not too shabby, if we do say so ourselves. Speaking of not too shabby: fifth place tie in kahiko; third place in ʻauana, both for mele hula honoring Lahaina and (in ʻauana) our own Aunty Irmgard Aluli.
